Get Gorgeous with Beauty by Bethany

Getting ready for your wedding can be stressful.  That's why hiring a makeup artist like Bethany Tiesman of Beauty by Bethany is an absolute essential.  Not only will Bethany make you look flawless on your Big Day, but she will also remove the stress of having to do your own makeup amidst the wedding day chaos.  Listen up, ladies because she's got some great words of wisdom for you.

Kentucky Bride Magazine: According to your website, you have always been in love with makeup.  What was your “lightbulb moment” when you realized that you wanted to work in the cosmetic industry for a living?

Bethany Tiesman: I would probably say that it happened sometime in 1997 when I received a book called "Making Faces" by Kevyn Aucoin.  I had always loved makeup, but before then, I had never realized that you could make a living out of it. I was a senior in high school then and that’s when I decided to become a makeup artist.

KBM: So, "Making Faces" by Kevyn Aucoin is one of your biggest inspirations.  What about his life and legacy as one of our generations best makeup artists inspires you most in your day-to-day career?

BT: I love the fact that he could make someone look like the red carpet version of themselves without overdoing it.

KBM: Why did you decide to start doing wedding makeup?

BT: I’d worked in various salons and spent a lot of time around other wedding makeup artists, and I discovered that if you make a bride look good on her wedding day, she will love you for life.

KBM: You’ve recently been voted “Best Wedding Makeup in the Louisville Area”.  What is it that sets you apart from other wedding makeup artists?

BT: A big part of it is just my passion for doing wedding makeup.  I love being able to make the bride feel beautiful on her Big Day.  Also, I listen to what the bride wants and always give them an honest, professional opinion when discussing a specific look they’re trying to achieve.

KBM: You specialize in airbrush artistry.  Why do you prefer airbrush makeup to the traditional types of makeup?

BT:  I personally prefer it because it lasts longer than traditional makeup and it makes the skin look completely flawless.

KBM: You own your own line of cosmetics, STELLA cosmetics.  What makes your line stand out?

BT: It’s very high quality and has great staying power. Also, it’s made for both professionals and everyday people.

KBM: You are also available to do makeup for photo shoots.  Do you do many engagement and boudoir photo sessions?

BT: Oh, yes!  Boudoir photo shoots have taken off in the last couple of years.  I do a lot of engagement shoots, but right now, boudoir is second in popularity only to bridal photo shoots. I’ve also done some trash the dress photo shoots after the wedding, as well.

KBM: As a professional brow waxer, how far in advance do you recommend that brides have their brows waxed?

BT: If they’ve had them done before and they just need a cleanup, they can have their brows waxed as close as three or four days prior to the wedding. If they have never had their brows waxed before, I would recommend having it done at least one to two weeks prior to their wedding day.  Many times, if I am doing a trial makeup application with a bride and she has never had her eyebrows waxed before, I will go ahead and do a trial run then.

KBM: How about lash tinting... how far in advance should that be done?  Can brides expect it to last through a honeymoon?

BT:  If the bride gets her eyelashes tinted three to four days before the wedding, they will be absolutely fresh and should lash through the entire honeymoon.  As far as maintenance goes, your eyelashes replenish themselves every 28 days, so if you want to keep your lashes tinted, you will need a retouch every three to four weeks.  If you don’t want to keep it up, you can just let it fade out.

KBM: What is your favorite part of working with brides on the most important day of their lives?

BT: I like being able to come to them and make them feel relaxed and pampered.  It’s important to give them their time to enjoy their special day.

KBM:  You offer one free trial with the booking of your services for a wedding.  Why do you think a Wedding Day Makeup trial is essential?

BT: It’s important that the bride knows what to expect on her wedding day.  Plus, I like to have a plan. It decreases the potential for a stressful situation.

KBM: Walk our readers through a session with Beauty by Bethany on their wedding day.

BT:  My time frame depends on the size of the wedding party.  The more people I have to makeup, the earlier I arrive.  I arrive at the designated location, set up all of my equipment and get to work.  I like to have everyone ready at least an hour before they should be.  The bride is always done last, right before she steps into her gown.

KBM: Give us a few words of wisdom to both educate and inspire our brides.

BT:  Whether you book a professional makeup artist on your Big Day or not, something to keep in mind is that your wedding photos are going to be how everyone remembers you from that day.  When you’re showing your wedding pictures to your grandchildren, you want to be happy with how you looked on your wedding day.
